What is a Macaron?

Make no mistake, macarons are not the coconut desserts, macaroons. These are two completely different snacks, but, the chances are high that you’ve seen macarons at a bakery or grocery store at some point in your life. These desserts come in an assortment of colors and flavors and are a delicious cookie sandwich that is stuffed with a specific filling that gives them their sense of pizzaz.

What Are Macarons Made Of?

There’s no doubt about it, the macaron is a sweet treat! The shell of a Mac is created with the combination of icing sugar, eggs, and ground almonds. These ingredients are folded and baked until they create the light crunch yet soft consistency of the meringue shell that so many people have come to love.

The ganache, jam, or buttercream filling is the main event to this dessert because it’s what brings in the elements of the many different flavors involved within the macaron spectrum.

Where Do They Come From?

The legend of the macaron stems all the way back to the days of King Louis XIV. It’s rumored that the French leader had macarons at his wedding. While the French macaron is thought to have originated from France, it’s really thought that the cookie stems from Italy and was brought to the French by Catherine di Medici.

However, it wasn’t until the 1839s that macarons became the dessert we all know and love. The original macaron was simply a serving of the cookie shell on its own. Fortunately, history got creative and began to sandwich jams and flavorings between these sweet delicacies we like to call, “Macs!”
